History
Rusko is the stage name of Christopher William Mercer, a British DJ and producer born in 1985 in Leeds and raised in York, England. He studied Music Performance at Leeds College of Music and got his start through the Leeds dubstep night Sub Dub before relocating to London to work with the Sub Soldiers label alongside Caspa. His 2007 double 12" Babylon, Vol. 1, featuring "Cockney Thug," became a genre landmark once it anchored his and Caspa's mix for Fabric's FabricLive.37 compilation - a release the Guardian later named one of the 50 key events in dance music history. Known for pushing dubstep's "wobble" bass toward brighter, funkier territory, Rusko went on to remix Lady Gaga, Kid Cudi and Kid Sister, and produced most of M.I.A.'s album Maya. His 2010 single "Cali Anthem" became the first dubstep track played on US radio. After the Mad Decent-released albums O.M.G.! (2010) and Songs (2012), he began self-releasing music, later joining Skrillex's label Owsla. In 2017 he was treated for gastric lymphoma and announced he was cancer-free by that October; he returned with the EP Genghis Danger in 2019.
