History

Flux Pavilion belongs to the wave of British producers who took dubstep away from its sparse, dub-informed origins and rebuilt it around a screaming, overdriven mid-range bass, the style that got nicknamed brostep. His records are built on a simple trick executed at maximum volume: a short melodic phrase stated cleanly, then repeated with the same notes played by a bass patch that sounds like tearing metal. I Can't Stop is the clearest case, and it travelled much further than the dance circuit when Jay-Z and Kanye West sampled it on Watch the Throne, which put that particular growl in front of a hip-hop audience. Bass Cannon was made for sound systems and behaves accordingly, while Gold Dust pairs a chopped vocal with the same sawing low end. He co-founded the Circus Records label, which became a home for much of that generation. What a listener recognises is the contrast: a melody sweet enough to hum, then the same melody rendered as distortion.
