History

Synkro is the project of Manchester producer Joe McBride, whose music moves between dubstep, garage, drum and bass and ambient without settling fully in any one of them. Early releases leaned on sampled vocals and the swung drums of UK garage, which placed him in the atmospheric corner of post-dubstep, among producers working at slower and more reflective tempos. Over time the sound became more melancholic and spacious. His debut album Changes came out in 2015 on Apollo, the ambient-minded sister label of R&S Records, and showed a new interest in cheap hardware synthesizers and a simpler way of arranging tracks. The second album, Images, also on Apollo, followed in 2019 and went further still, drawing on the new age and ambient records of the 1980s and 1990s and relying on an analogue setup instead of samples. Across both stages the same things come through: soft pads that hang in the air, sparse and careful percussion, deep low end and a mood that belongs to the hours after midnight rather than to peak time.
