History

Subtronics, the project of Philadelphia producer Jesse Kardon, turned weird, cartoonish sound design into one of the biggest draws in American dubstep. His tracks mix the heavy halftime weight of tearout with the bouncing, repetitive patterns of riddim, then fill the gaps with squelches, robotic voices and sudden left turns that sound almost like jokes built out of bass. The breakthrough came with Griztronics, a collaboration with GRiZ that found a second life on TikTok and carried his sound well beyond festival crowds. In 2020 he launched his own label, Cyclops Recordings, named after the one-eyed mascot that appears across his visuals. His debut album Fractals arrived in 2022 and showed a wider range, placing melodic and emotional moments next to the heaviest drops, and it was followed by the remix companion Antifractals and then the album Tesseract. He has worked with Excision, Zeds Dead, Rezz and Rusko among others. Listeners recognise him by playful, highly detailed bass sounds, abrupt switches in rhythm and a sense of humour that never lightens the weight of the drop.
