History
Marauda makes some of the most punishing music in modern dubstep: tearout and deathstep built from metallic, heavily resampled basses, blunt halftime drums and an atmosphere closer to horror films than to a party. The producer is based in Sydney, Australia, and released early EPs such as Malignant and Decimate in the late 2010s. Malignant also became the name of his own label, which gave him a home for his releases and for like-minded producers. His basses are recognisable by the way they seem to grind and mutate, the result of passing sounds through resampling again and again until they turn into something close to machinery or distorted guitar. That metal-leaning aggression, along with dark, occult-flavoured artwork and titles, made him one of the names most associated with the rise of tearout and trench from underground forums to large festival bass stages. Later releases such as Ascension Rite kept the brutality while giving the tracks more structure and dramatic build, but the core stays the same: little melody, maximum pressure and constant sound-design detail.
