History

Steve Roach builds immersive ambient music from layered analog synthesizers, sequencer pulses, didgeridoo, hand percussion and vast, slowly shifting drones. He began in the early 1980s under the influence of the Berlin school of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, then found his own voice with Structures from Silence (1984), a quiet, spacious record that became a cornerstone of American ambient. Trips to Australia fed into Dreamtime Return (1988), a sprawling double album that mixed electronics with tribal rhythms and the drone of didgeridoo. Desert Solitaire (1989), made with Michael Stearns and Kevin Braheny, tied his sound to the deserts of the American Southwest, and he later settled in the Arizona desert, where he records in his own studio. Over the following decades he released a very large body of work, moving between floating space ambient, dark ritual pieces and rhythmic trance-like journeys. His music is recognised by its patience: long forms, deep low frequencies, and textures that feel like heat, dust and night sky.
