History
Tribes of Neurot is the ritual ambient side of the Neurosis world: long, droning pieces built from processed percussion, feedback, field recordings and low electronic hum rather than riffs. The collective grew out of the Oakland band in the 1990s as an outlet for the textures that Neurosis only hinted at on its heavier records, and it released its work on the band's own label, Neurot Recordings. Silver Blood Transmission from 1995 set the template, a slow, tribal and deeply unsettling listen. The best known idea came in 1999 with Grace, an album designed to be played at the same time as the Neurosis record Times of Grace, so that the two layer into a single, denser piece. That experiment sums up the project: it treats sound as atmosphere and ritual, not as songs. Its signature is throbbing drums buried in fog, a sense of ceremony, and noise, drone and near silence trading places over very long spans. It sits between industrial ambient and the experimental edge of American heavy music.
