History

Bill Laswell treats the bass guitar and the mixing desk as instruments of equal weight, and his ambient dub work sounds like a vast echo chamber where reggae low end, jazz, Middle Eastern and African music and electronics dissolve into one another. An American bassist, producer and label founder, he first drew attention in New York's downtown scene with the group Material and went on to produce records across funk, jazz, hip hop and rock, including Herbie Hancock's electro breakthrough Rockit. Through his Axiom label in the 1990s he brought players from different traditions together and reshaped the results in the studio. Axiom Ambient: Lost in the Translation (1994) is a long, drifting assemblage built from those sessions, and Hashisheen: The End of Law (1999) wraps spoken word and ambient textures around the legend of Hassan-i Sabbah. He also remixed archive recordings of Miles Davis and Bob Marley. A listener recognises him by heavy, rounded bass, cavernous dub space and a restless mix of global sources.
