History
Raison d'être is the long-running project of the Swedish musician Peter Andersson, and one of the acts that defined what dark ambient sounded like in the 1990s. Its music draws on the atmosphere of churches and monasteries: layered choral fragments that recall Gregorian chant, tolling bells, metallic scrapes and industrial rumble, all drowned in vast reverb. The project was a cornerstone of Cold Meat Industry, the Swedish label that gathered much of the era's dark ambient and industrial scene, and early albums, among them In Sadness, Silence and Solitude, set its tone of devotional sorrow. Andersson has kept the project going for decades, with later work like Alchymeia shifting toward alchemical and psychological themes while keeping the same sacred, ritual feel. Raison d'être sits between ambient and ritual music: it moves slowly, but it carries a sense of ceremony that pure drone lacks. Its trademark is those ghostly choirs rising out of industrial noise, like a mass heard through the walls of a ruin.
