History

Sleep turned the Black Sabbath riff into a ritual: enormously heavy, slow and repeated until it becomes a trance, with fuzz-laden guitar, rumbling bass and chanted vocals about pilgrimage, cannabis and sacred smoke. The band came out of San Jose, California, around the turn of the nineties, with Al Cisneros on bass and vocals, Matt Pike on guitar and Chris Hakius on drums. Sleep's Holy Mountain, released in 1992 on Earache, became a founding record of stoner doom. The group then spent years on a single song, about an hour long, which their major label refused to release as delivered; it eventually appeared as Jerusalem in 1999 and in fuller form as Dopesmoker in 2003, by which point the band had broken up. Pike went on to form High on Fire, while Cisneros and Hakius started Om. Sleep reunited years later and in 2018 released The Sciences, their first new album in decades, put out on April 20 through Third Man Records. Their riffs roll on for minutes at a time, and the mood is both crushing and serene.
