History

Solitude Aeturnus play epic doom in its most melodic form: slow, crushing riffs set under a soaring, operatic vocal line and long arrangements that feel closer to tragedy than to gloom. The band comes from Arlington, Texas, and was started in 1987 by guitarist John Perez, who wanted something slower and heavier than thrash, in the spirit of Witchfinder General, Saint Vitus and Candlemass. The first name was simply Solitude, a nod to songs of that title by Black Sabbath and Candlemass; the Latin word was added later. The debut Into the Depths of Sorrow and the follow-up Beyond the Crimson Horizon set the template: twin guitars moving in stately harmony, a rhythm section that lets every chord ring out, and Robert Lowe's high, clear voice carrying the melody above it. Lowe was later also the singer of Candlemass, which says a lot about where the band sits in the genre. Alone, released in 2006, kept the same sound intact. A listener recognises them by that combination of slow tempo and grand, almost classical singing.
