History

Monolord build their doom on repetition and weight: huge, fuzz-drenched riffs repeated until they become hypnotic, slow drums with plenty of air around them, and a distant, reverb-soaked vocal floating above the noise. The trio formed in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2013, and their debut Empress Rising came out in 2014 on RidingEasy Records, a Los Angeles label. It spread quickly through online doom circles and set the template: long songs that lock into one enormous groove and ride it. Vænir in 2015 and Rust in 2017 kept that approach while giving more room to melody and to a warmer, more psychedelic haze. Compared with the grimmer, more theatrical side of doom, their sound feels meditative, closer to a trance state than a horror film, with the heaviness coming from sheer volume and tone rather than speed or aggression. They belong to the wave of 2010s bands that made fuzz-heavy stoner doom a steady live draw in Europe. The giveaway is that wall of bass-heavy fuzz and the dreamy, far-off voice.
