History

Bell Witch make funeral doom without a guitar. The Seattle act began as a duo of bass and drums, and the bass does the work of both instruments: a six-string played with a tapping technique that lets it carry low drones and high, fragile melody at once. Over that sit two kinds of voice, a mournful clean chant and a deep roar, trading lines across songs that unfold at a crawl. The name comes from the Bell Witch haunting, a well-known piece of Tennessee folklore, and grief and memory run through the lyrics. Longing (2012) and Four Phantoms (2015) built their reputation in the doom underground. Then the founding drummer died in 2016, and the next record, Mirror Reaper (2017), became a single track of more than eighty minutes, with his recorded vocals folded into it. It is widely treated as one of the defining funeral doom records of its decade. Bell Witch are recognised by that bare instrumentation, the huge empty space between notes, and a patience that turns an album into one long act of mourning.
