History
Saint Vitus took the slow, crushing side of Black Sabbath and played it with punk attitude at a time when almost nobody else wanted to. The band formed in Los Angeles around 1979, originally under another name, and became one of the founders of American doom metal. Unusually for a metal band, they signed to SST Records, the label run by Black Flag's Greg Ginn, and toured with hardcore bands in front of punk audiences often baffled by the tempos. Their self-titled debut in 1984 set out the style: down-tuned, dragging riffs and Dave Chandler's wild, feedback-soaked wah guitar solos. Scott Weinrich, known as Wino, joined as singer for Born Too Late in 1986, and the title track became the band's anthem, a statement of being out of step with fashion. Die Healing in 1995 brought back the original vocalist for a heavier, bleaker record. After years of obscurity, their influence on doom, stoner and sludge bands became widely acknowledged. Their trademarks are the funereal tempos, the chaotic lead guitar and lyrics about outsiders and despair.
