History
Sault are a British group blending R&B, soul, funk, gospel, house and disco, built around producer Inflo (Dean Josiah Cover, born 1988 in London) and singer-songwriter Cleo Sol (Cleopatra Nikolic, born 1990), with collaborator Melisa Young (Kid Sister) also credited on early records. They surfaced anonymously in early 2019 with the singles "We Are the Sun" and "Don't Waste My Time," followed within months by two albums, 5 and 7. Their profile grew sharply in June 2020 with Untitled (Black Is), released free amid the Black Lives Matter protests with proceeds going to charity, and its companion Untitled (Rise) that September, which was shortlisted for the 2021 Mercury Prize. The group has never given interviews or shown their faces, refusing music videos and press for years. By 2023 they had put out eleven albums in four years, and their 2021 album Nine was deliberately pulled from streaming after exactly 99 days, as announced in advance.
