History
Mahalia Burkmar, who performs simply as Mahalia, is a British R&B and neo-soul singer-songwriter born 1 May 1998 in Syston, Leicestershire, England. Music ran in the family: her mother, Debbion Currie, was the first singer of the English band Colourbox in the early 1980s, and Mahalia herself drew interest from major labels by age 13, releasing her debut EP, Head Space, in 2012. She toured as support for Ed Sheeran and Emeli Sande, and in 2015 featured on Rudimental's single "We the Generation," performing it on Later... with Jools Holland. Her real breakthrough came in 2017, when her stripped-back performance of "Sober" for the YouTube channel COLORS went viral, racking up more than 20 million views and helping her top YouTube's Ones to Watch list in 2018. She has released three studio albums - Diary of Me (2016), Love and Compromise (2019), and IRL (2023) - and won Best Female Act and Best R&B/Soul Act at the 2020 MOBO Awards, alongside a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance.
