History
Jorja Alice Smith was born on 11 June 1997 in Walsall, West Midlands, England, to a Jamaican father and an English mother, and grew up writing songs from age 11. A YouTube cover of Labrinth's "Earthquake" led to her discovery, and after her 2016 debut single "Blue Lights" and follow-up "Where Did I Go?" (singled out by Drake as a favourite track), she signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV. Her sound blends R&B, pop, hip-hop, grime and UK garage. She featured on two songs from Drake's mixtape More Life (2017), co-wrote and sang "I Am" for Kendrick Lamar's Black Panther soundtrack (2018), and released her acclaimed debut album Lost & Found (2018), which reached number three on the UK Albums Chart. She won the Brit Critics' Choice Award in 2018 as the first independent artist ever nominated for it, was named Best British Female Artist at the 2019 Brit Awards, and received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Her second album, Falling or Flying, followed in 2023.
