History
Roxette is a Swedish pop rock duo formed in Halmstad in 1986 by singer Marie Fredriksson and singer-guitarist Per Gessle, both already established solo artists on the Swedish scene. Their sound blended arena-ready rock guitars with glossy synth-pop hooks. The duo broke internationally with 1989's Look Sharp!, led by the US number-one single "The Look." Their next chart-topper, "It Must Have Been Love," became a global phenomenon after appearing on the soundtrack of Pretty Woman (1990). Follow-up albums Joyride (1991) and Crash! Boom! Bang! (1994) kept them among the biggest-selling acts to come out of Sweden, second only to ABBA, with worldwide sales topping 80 million records. Fredriksson's 2002 brain tumor diagnosis forced a long hiatus; she returned for a 2009-2016 comeback before her death in December 2019. Gessle later revived the catalog for the "Roxette in Concert" tours, with Lena Philipsson on vocals.
