History

Caroline Müller, born in 1964 and raised in Germany, was renamed C.C. Catch by Dieter Bohlen, who wrote and produced everything on her first run of albums. Between 1986 and 1988 that meant four records, Catch the Catch, Welcome to the Heartbreak Hotel, Like a Hurricane and Big Fun, arriving at a pace only a single-author production line allows. The songs work the same machinery as Bohlen's Modern Talking: minor key, four-on-the-floor at Hi-NRG tempo, a stacked backing choir answering every line, and a hook stated inside the first eight seconds. "Cause You Are Young", "Heaven and Hell" and "Strangers by Night" are the ones that stuck, and the earlier "I Can Lose My Heart Tonight" set the pattern. Her voice sits lower and drier than the euro-disco norm, which is what separates these records from their neighbours. She and Bohlen parted at the end of the decade. As with much of this scene, the listeners who stayed were largely in Eastern Europe.
