History
Propellerheads were an English electronic duo formed in 1995 in Bath, Somerset, by Will White and Alex Gifford, working in the big beat and breakbeat styles that defined UK dance music in the late 1990s. Gifford had previously played saxophone for The Stranglers before starting the project on the Wall of Sound label. Their sole studio album, Decksandrumsandrockandroll (1998), went gold in the UK and Australia and featured guest collaborations with hip hop acts De La Soul and Jungle Brothers on its US edition. The duo's biggest chart hit, "History Repeating," paired their breakbeats with veteran Bond-theme singer Shirley Bassey, while their instrumental track "Spybreak!" became widely known after being used in the lobby shootout scene of The Matrix (1999). They also reworked David Arnold's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and remixed Bassey's "Goldfinger." After touring the album, White fell ill; the band went on hiatus around 1999 and never released a second album, though they resurfaced briefly for a one-off track on Wall of Sound's tenth-anniversary compilation in 2003.
