History

Pendulum took drum and bass out of the dark and pointed it at a festival field. The group formed in Perth before relocating to Britain, and the early material kept the genre's fast broken beats while adding something rock audiences recognised: big sustained synth chords, drops arranged like choruses, and vocals sung rather than toasted. The second phase went further by rebuilding the band as a live act with drums, bass and guitar playing the parts a sequencer had handled, which changed both the records and the shows. Propane Nightmares is the clearest statement of that shift, opening with brass fanfare before the breakbeat arrives. Watercolour and The Island came from the period when the songwriting side won out, the latter running long enough to work as a house record before it turns. Two albums reached the upper end of the UK chart, an unusual place for drum and bass, and the crossover template they set was picked up across the heavier end of electronic dance music.
