History

Парк Горького played American arena hard rock with Soviet musicians, and played it well enough to be signed by a major American label, which no Soviet rock band had managed before. The group came together in Moscow at the end of the 1980s under the wing of Stas Namin, and its debut reached Western radio and MTV with Bang, a track built on twin guitars, stacked vocal harmonies and the production gloss of the period. Nikolai Noskov sang on that first record with a high, clean tenor that carried over the guitars without strain. After he left, the band's centre of gravity moved back towards Russia, and Moscow Calling from the early nineties became the song they are still known for at home: a mid tempo anthem with a chorus written to be sung by a full hall. They are recognisable by that combination of a polished late eighties rock arrangement with a Russian delivery, and by the afterlife of Moscow Calling, which still turns up on radio and in stadiums decades after the band's peak.
