History
A trained tenor who took the long way into pop. Nikolai Baskov was born in 1976 in Balashikha near Moscow, studied at the Gnesin Academy and then at the Moscow Conservatory, and started on the opera stage rather than in a studio. The academic placement of the voice never went anywhere, and it explains how the records sound: a full operatic top sitting on arrangements written for light entertainment. Early duets with Montserrat Caballe fixed his reputation as a crossover singer rather than as an estrada vocalist who happened to have range. "Sharmanka", "Otpusti menya" and "Naturalny blondin" are the pop side of that career, romance-shaped melodies delivered at concert-hall volume, with vibrato most of his chart neighbours could not produce if they wanted to. Since the early 2000s he has been a fixture of Russian New Year television, the broadcasts that decide what a whole country hears in December. He holds the title of People's Artist of Russia.
