History
Stas Mikhaylov (Stanislav Vladimirovich Mikhaylov) is a Russian singer-songwriter born 27 April 1969 in Sochi, then part of the Soviet Union. His father was a test pilot and his mother a nurse. Before breaking through, Mikhaylov worked odd jobs in his hometown and sang in Sochi restaurants; he wrote one of his first known songs, "Свеча" ("Candle"), in 1992 and used it as the title of his 1997 debut album, which sold poorly. He relocated permanently to Moscow only in the early 2000s, when the ballad "Без тебя" ("Without You") got radio airplay and opened the door to wider fame. His sound sits at the crossroads of Russian chanson and sentimental pop ballads about love and heartbreak. Through the 2000s and 2010s he built a large catalog, including the albums "Небеса," "Живой," and "Джокер," and has performed multiple sold-out concerts at Moscow's State Kremlin Palace. Despite limited early mainstream exposure, Forbes Russia ranked him the country's highest-earning singer in both 2011 ($20 million) and 2012 ($21 million). He holds the titles Merited Artist of Russia (2010) and People's Artist of Russia (2022).
