History
Mitski writes songs that sound composed rather than jammed, which follows from a formal training in studio composition, and then performs them with a volume and violence indie rock rarely reaches. The music moves from solo piano to distorted bass-driven rock to synthetic pop without ever stopping being hers, because the constant is the writing: short lines, plain words, and an exactness about loneliness, wanting, the body and the feeling of belonging to no single place. Puberty 2 carried that to a wider audience and Be the Cowboy added theatre, a set of small character pieces arranged with disco drums, organ and country pedal steel. On stage she works with choreography rather than with a band standing behind her. Her audience found her mostly through the internet, and the songs took on a second life as short clips, which is unusual for material this bleak. What listeners recognise is the voice: unornamented, exposed, and pushed right to the front of the mix.
