History

Cigarettes After Sex built a whole catalogue out of one texture and refused to leave it. The project began in El Paso, Texas, and its sound was set early: guitars soaked in reverb and tremolo, brushed or barely-there drums, tempos that rarely rise above a slow walk, and a high, breathy, androgynous lead vocal that many listeners assume belongs to a woman on first hearing. The lyrics are plain and specific, closer to remembered conversation than to imagery, which is why the songs read as intimate rather than merely dreamy. An early EP circulated quietly for years before "Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby" found an audience online, and the self-titled album that followed in 2017 set the template the band has kept since. "Apocalypse" became the entry point for most listeners and has passed a billion streams, carrying the group from small rooms to arenas. The visual identity matches the music: black-and-white sleeves, low light, almost no colour anywhere.
