History

boygenius is what happened when three songwriters who already had their own audiences decided their voices were more interesting stacked than separate. Julien Baker brings the tension and the loud guitar, Phoebe Bridgers the quiet delivery that lands its worst line almost as an aside, Lucy Dacus the steady narrative verses, and the trio hands the lead around inside a single song rather than splitting the record into solo turns. The first EP arrived almost as an experiment in 2018, and the album the record made the case that this was a real band rather than a summit meeting. Not Strong Enough builds from a plain rock figure into a line repeated by all three until it stops meaning what it meant at the start. $20 is louder than anything any of them has released alone. Cool About It sets the three voices close together and almost unaccompanied. The harmony is the point: rough, unpolished, held slightly apart rather than blended smooth.
