History

Method Man is recognised by timbre before anyone parses a line: a thick, phlegmy growl that swings lazily behind the beat and never blurs into the eight other rappers he shared a crew with. He came out of Staten Island as part of Wu-Tang Clan and was the first of them to release a solo album, which made him the group's commercial front door. His verses lean on cadence rather than density, stretching syllables, sliding into a half sung hook, then snapping back into hard delivery. The early solo material sat on dusty minor key soul loops with the drums left deliberately raw. The duet work with Mary J. Blige and the long partnership with Redman showed a second side: a comic, charismatic performer as comfortable trading punchlines as sounding dangerous. Later he moved into acting without giving up records. What a listener holds onto is the smoky rasp and the habit of shouting his own name mid verse until it functions as a hook.
