History
Love took the jangle of Los Angeles folk-rock and bent it toward something stranger and darker, led by Arthur Lee, one of the few Black bandleaders in the mid-1960s rock scene. The band played the Sunset Strip clubs and became an early rock signing for Elektra. Da Capo swung between the frantic proto-punk burst of "7 and 7 Is" and a side-long jam, "Revelation", while its first side leaned toward jazzy, harpsichord-flecked pop. Forever Changes is the record the band is remembered by: acoustic guitars laced with strings and horns, Mariachi-tinged trumpet, and lyrics that sound serene until the words land, full of dread about the city and the times. Bryan MacLean wrote and sang its opener, "Alone Again Or". The album sold modestly at release and grew in stature for decades afterward. The sound is recognisable in its contrast: gentle, ornate arrangements carrying Lee's sly, uneasy voice and images of violence and paranoia under a sunny surface.
