History

A musician's son, born in Moscow in 1968, Leonid Agutin won the Jurmala song contest in 1992 with «Босоногий мальчик» and has written most of his own material ever since. What separated him from the estrada around him was rhythm: instead of a four-on-the-floor kick or march figures he used bossa nova, samba and related Latin patterns, with nylon-string guitar and percussion well forward in the mix. Over that sits a soft, slightly nasal baritone that never pushes. «Хоп-хей-ла-ла-лей» carried the approach into heavy rotation, «Летний дождь» shows its ballad side. In 2005 he recorded the album Cosmopolitan Life with the guitarist Al Di Meola, an unusual crossing for a Russian pop singer and a fair indication of what he listens to himself. He works regularly with his wife Anzhelika Varum, and arranges and produces for other singers.
