History
Lesopoval began in 1990 as a project of the poet Mikhail Tanich, who wrote the words and assembled a band around them. The idea was to take blatnyak, the prison and street song tradition that circulated mostly on cassette, and give it literate writing and a clean studio arrangement: a proper rhythm section, keyboards, backing vocals, a mix fit for radio. «Я куплю тебе дом» is where it worked, and the debut album took the same title. Sergei Korzhukov sang the early material; his death in 1994 pushed the group through a succession of vocalists while Tanich kept supplying lyrics until his own death in 2008. The songs are usually first-person and narrative, short stories about separation, loyalty and the camp, set to minor-key melodies that lean on accordion and guitar. A great deal of what was later sold as Russian chanson runs back through this band.
