History
Joey Bada$$, born Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott on January 20, 1995, in Brooklyn, New York, is an American rapper, singer, and actor who emerged in the early 2010s as a leading voice of East Coast hip-hop's boom-bap revival. In 2012 he co-founded the Brooklyn collective Pro Era with his high school friend Capital Steez (Courtney Dewar Jr.) and Powers Pleasant, and that same year released his breakout mixtape "1999," praised for its jazzy, '90s-indebted production and lyrical maturity from a rapper still in his teens. His sound draws heavily on Nas, 2Pac, and MF DOOM, and often carries political and social commentary. He later became part of the wider Beast Coast collective alongside Flatbush Zombies and the Underachievers. His studio albums B4.Da.$$ (2015) and All-Amerikkkan Badass (2017) both peaked at number five on the Billboard 200. He also built an acting career, debuting in the USA series "Mr. Robot." One sobering footnote to his origin story: Capital Steez, his mentor and Pro Era co-founder, died by suicide in December 2012, just months after they built the group together.
