History

Westside Gunn is known as much for curation as for rapping: a high, nasal voice, gunshot ad-libs shouted between bars, and albums built like luxury objects, with fine art, designer fashion and wrestling references running through them. He founded Griselda Records in Buffalo, New York, in 2012 and brought in his half-brother Conway the Machine and cousin Benny the Butcher, forming the core of a crew that made dusty, drumless East Coast rap fashionable again. His early Hitler Wears Hermes tapes set out the formula with producers Daringer and Beat Butcha, and Flygod in 2016 became the crew's calling card. The deal with Shady Records followed, and Supreme Blientele leaned into his love of 1980s and 1990s wrestling. Pray for Paris, made after a trip to Paris Fashion Week, brought in more famous guests and producers while keeping the cold, eerie loops. The ad-libs, the flamboyant luxury imagery set against street violence and his habit of shaping the sound of everyone around him make Gunn as much a tastemaker as a rapper.
