History

Funky, the stage name of Puerto Rican rapper Luis Marrero, is one of the central figures of Christian hip hop and reggaeton in Latin America, both as a performer and as a producer. His music uses the beats and flow of urban Puerto Rican rap and reggaeton to carry openly faith-based lyrics, and over the years he has released seven solo albums, among them Los Vencedores, Reset and Indestructible. Much of his influence comes from collaboration. He has worked with Christian music figures such as Marcos Witt, Jesús Adrián Romero and KJ-52, and has recorded or produced for Vico C, Manny Montes, Redimi2, Alex Zurdo, DJ Blass, Julissa and Israel & New Breed, among others. With Redimi2 he made the joint album Más, and together with Redimi2 and Alex Zurdo he later formed the project UNO. He has been nominated twice for the Latin Grammy. Across his records the constant is an energetic, punchy delivery over club-ready rhythms, and a sense of a scene built from shared tracks, guest verses and cross-island partnerships rather than solo careers alone.
