History

Kirill Tolmatsky recorded as Detsl and was still a teenager when «Кто ты?» (2000) appeared. It is usually counted as the first Russian rap album to reach a genuinely mass young audience: a thin, unbroken adolescent voice over nu-metal guitars and hard programmed drums, released through the Bad B. camp around Vlad Valov. «Уличный боец» followed in 2001. Television slots, magazine covers and a father who worked in the music business made him a pop figure very quickly, and that same visibility made him an easy target inside the scene, which read the records as manufactured. His answer was to leave that market. Under the name Le Truk he moved into a rougher, slower underground sound with reggae and dancehall inside it, and worked well away from radio for the rest of his career. He died in 2019, at thirty-five, while touring.
