History

Andrey Menshikov came up inside the Bad B. circle in the 1990s, which puts him one generation earlier than most of the people he later shared stages with. Working as Ligalize, he spent the 2000s pulling that school toward live playing: horns, bass and drums arranged like a funk band rather than programmed, with a springy, combative flow on top that keeps the accents on the beat instead of behind it. «XL» (2005) is the solo record that gathers the approach, and «Будущие мамы» is the song most listeners recognise first. He also worked in a duo format before going solo, and the through-line across all of it is the same: 1990s Russian battle-rap phrasing, an old-school respect for clean articulation, and arrangements borrowed from soul and funk. A useful bridge between the first Moscow rap wave and what followed it.
