History

Deep Forest works by placing recordings of traditional singing over slow electronic production. The French project took vocal samples associated with central African and, later, other non-Western traditions, looped a phrase until it functioned as a hook, and set it against soft pads, a mid-tempo programmed beat and a great deal of reverb. 'Sweet Lullaby' is the clearest example of the method and became one of the records that defined calm listening in the early 1990s, the kind of thing playing in shops and on late-night radio across Europe. Boheme moved the sourcing toward Eastern Europe and won a Grammy. The approach has been argued over ever since, because the singers on those samples were not collaborators in any ordinary sense, and that debate is now part of the project's history rather than a footnote to it. A listener recognises the sound by its contrast: an unaccompanied human voice, captured somewhere with no studio in it, sitting on a very clean synthetic bed.
