History

Zero 7 are a British production duo who came out of studio engineering and kept an engineer's priorities: space, warmth and a very slow tempo. The records are built from Fender Rhodes chords, muted breakbeats, live strings and a soft low end, and they work almost entirely with guest singers rather than a fixed vocalist, which gives each album the shape of a compilation held together by one hand. Simple Things, in 2001, put downtempo into British living rooms and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Destiny, sung by Sia, and In the Waiting Line are the tracks most people know, both delivered near a whisper over arrangements that move slowly enough to pass for background music until the harmony shifts underneath. Later work turned more acoustic and more melancholy. The style dated quickly as a label, but the production holds up because the playing is live and the mixes leave air around every part.
