History

Enigma is the studio project of the producer Michael Cretu, and its sound was assembled rather than performed: a slow programmed beat, a bass line that barely moves, and over it samples of plainchant, wooden flute and whispered vocals in several languages. The first album appeared in 1990 and worked because nothing else on radio was shaped like it. The tempo sits near a resting pulse, the mix is wide and reverberant, and the religious material is used for atmosphere rather than for meaning, which was both the appeal and the reason for the criticism the project attracted. The chant sample at the heart of the first single, and later the use of an aboriginal Taiwanese recording on Return to Innocence, made the question of where the sounds came from part of the story, and the second case ended in a legal settlement. The debut charted in more than forty countries and the first single reached number one across much of Europe. A listener recognises Enigma by the shakuhachi figure, the breathy spoken line and the beat that never hurries.
