History

Convulse played a raw, murky strain of death metal that sits at the root of the Finnish scene. The band formed in 1988 in Nokia, a small industrial town near Tampere, and counts among the earliest extreme metal acts in the country. Their debut, World Without God (1991), is thick and low-tuned, with doom-heavy slow passages, grimy guitar tone and a vocal delivery that sounds dragged up from somewhere underground. By Reflections (1994), released through Relapse, the band had loosened the formula and let rock grooves and stranger, more melodic ideas into the songs, a turn that later earned the label death 'n' roll. That same year the group fell apart as its members went off to do military service, which is part of why Convulse were not fully appreciated in their time. They reunited in 2012, went on to record Evil Prevails, Cycle of Revenge and Deathstar, and have played festivals such as Maryland Deathfest. Listeners recognise them by that murky Finnish rumble and a restless urge to bend it.
