History

Amorphis built their sound on the meeting of death metal and Finnish folk melody: heavy, low-tuned riffs and growled vocals carrying tunes that sound as if they came from old runo songs. Formed in Helsinki at the start of the 1990s, the band began as a fairly straight death metal act, with The Karelian Isles in 1992 already hinting at a more melodic, atmospheric direction. The breakthrough was Tales from the Thousand Lakes in 1994, a record based on the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. Keyboards, clean vocals alongside the growls and folk-like guitar lines gave it a mood no other death metal album had at the time, and it is still counted among the key records of melodic death metal. Over the following years the band moved further away from its extreme roots towards progressive and melodic heavy metal, often returning to the Kalevala for lyrics and to folk scales for melodies. Their influence runs through much of Finnish metal that came after. Listeners recognise Amorphis by the singing lead guitar lines, the Nordic melancholy and the way heaviness and melody share the same space.
