History

Change was a studio-born project that bridged Italian disco production and New York soul, and it became one of the reference points of early 1980s boogie. The act was put together around 1979 by Italian producers Jacques Fred Petrus and Mauro Malavasi, who cut rhythm tracks in Italy and brought in American singers to finish the records. The first album, The Glow of Love, featured a then little-known Luther Vandross on lead vocals for the title track and for Searching, and its mix of crisp guitar, bubbling bass, strings and clean, joyful vocals made it a favourite in clubs and on R&B radio. Miracles continued the sound with a more settled set of singers. By Change of Heart the group had moved toward a leaner, synth-driven mid-80s R&B, with the title track produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Change's records have long been prized by DJs and have been sampled and reworked many times. Listeners recognise them by the bright, precise grooves, the transatlantic polish and the uplifting, open-hearted choruses.
