History
Luther Vandross defined the 1980s soul ballad with a voice of rare control: smooth, precise, full of carefully placed runs and long sustained notes. A New Yorker, he spent the 1970s as a backing vocalist, arranger and jingle singer, sang on David Bowie's Young Americans and co-wrote Fascination for it, and sang lead for the Italian studio act Change on The Glow of Love before his own career took off. His 1981 debut Never Too Much set the template: an uptempo boogie title track on a buoyant bass line, and slow, elaborate reworkings of songs stretched into showcases for phrasing and layered harmony. Vandross produced much of his own work, with bassist Marcus Miller a key collaborator for years. Through Give Me the Reason and Power of Love he stayed a fixture of R&B radio, and he also produced for Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick. His final album included Dance with My Father, released shortly after the stroke that ended his performing life; he died in 2005. Listeners recognise him by the silk of the tone and the luxurious stacked background vocals.
