History

Loose Ends were the London trio that proved British musicians could make R&B for the American market on its own terms. Carl McIntosh, Jane Eugene and Steve Nichol built their sound on crisp drum machines, layered synths, slap bass and close vocal interplay, recorded largely in Philadelphia with producer Nick Martinelli. So Where Are You? carried "Hangin' on a String (Contemplating)", which topped the US R&B chart and is often cited as the first time a British act did so. Zagora continued the run with "Slow Down", polished mid-tempo funk that sat comfortably next to the best American productions of the period. Their records were a reference point for the UK street soul scene that followed: groove first, restrained vocals, and a cool, urban mood rather than big balladry. By Look How Long the lineup had changed, with McIntosh leading a new version of the group and the sound drifting toward the harder swing of the new decade. McIntosh went on to work widely as a producer. A listener knows them by the sleek bass, the dry snare and those understated, interlocking voices.
