History
Cauldron play compact, hook-driven heavy metal in the style of the early 1980s: clean, chiming guitar tones, mid-tempo gallops and choruses built to be sung back. The trio formed in Toronto in 2006 after the breakup of Goat Horn, with Jason Decay on bass and vocals and Ian Chains on guitar, and Earache Records signed them in 2008. Their debut Chained to the Nite followed in 2009, then Burning Fortune in 2011 and Tomorrow's Lost in 2012, records that placed them among the first North American bands of the new wave of traditional heavy metal, alongside European acts such as Enforcer. Where many peers leaned on speed, Cauldron favoured melody and atmosphere, with a melancholy, almost hard-rock streak under the riffs. In Ruin in 2016 and New Gods in 2018 refined that approach. Decay's thin, earnest tenor is the most recognisable element, set against layered guitar leads, a busy bass and production that deliberately avoids modern compression, so the records sound as if they were cut in a small studio in 1984.
