History

Lil Tracy makes emo rap that mixes trap drums with gothic mood, pop punk hooks and a flamboyant, fashion-obsessed persona. He is the son of Ishmael Butler of Digable Planets and Shabazz Palaces, and first appeared online in the early 2010s under the name Yung Bruh, part of the loose internet rap scene that grew around SoundCloud. He joined GothBoiClique, the collective that blended emo, goth and hip-hop, and is best known for his work with Lil Peep, which includes songs such as "Awful Things" and "Witchblades". Those collaborations helped define the sound later labelled emo rap: sad, melodic hooks sung over cloudy trap production, with guitar samples and lyrics about heartbreak, drugs and self-destruction. His own releases, including the 2017 project XOXO, sit between that melancholy and a brighter, more playful swagger. Listeners recognise Lil Tracy by his high, slightly nasal singing voice, his mix of rock and rap references, and the shift between fragile confessions and boastful designer-label lines.
