History

Braid built their sound on two guitars that knot around each other in odd meters, with shouted and sung vocals trading lines over the top. The band came out of Champaign, Illinois in the early 1990s and became one of the defining acts of Midwest emo, the scene that took hardcore's urgency and gave it angular, math-leaning structure and a warmer, more melodic pull. The Age of Octeen in 1996 set out the approach, and Frame & Canvas, released on Polyvinyl in 1998, is the record most often cited as their high point, dense with interlocking riffs and restless tempo changes. The band split at the end of the decade, and members went on to projects such as Hey Mercedes. After reunion shows, Braid returned with a full album, No Coast, on Topshelf Records in 2014, which showed the same nervous energy in a cleaner frame. Their influence is heard all over the later emo revival. A listener recognises Braid by the tangled guitar interplay, the call-and-response vocals and choruses that feel shouted by a room rather than one singer.
