History

Sovietwave is a branch of synthwave from the former Soviet Union, mostly Russia, and its nostalgia points at the space program, retrofuturist architecture and the music of Soviet cartoons and films. An early sketch came during the trance boom of the 2000s, when PPK built tracks on melodies from Soviet electronic music. Until 2014 groups like N.E.M.O., Kim and Buran and PPVK were still filed under indie or lo-fi, and the Kharkiv project Mayak was one of the first to set itself apart. The sound rests on lo-fi, ambient and late Soviet synth-pop played on vintage synthesizers, cut with clips from educational films and speeches by Soviet statesmen. Its influences run from Eduard Artemyev and Aleksandr Zatsepin to Depeche Mode and Modern Talking, both popular in the USSR. Ivan Beletsky wrote that seemingly every second band samples the same TASS bulletin about a man launched into space. The first festival of the genre, Volna-1, took place in St Petersburg in August 2018. During the pandemic Molchat Doma's song Sudno became a TikTok meme and set off a stream of sovietwave compilations, even though the band criticised the genre for ignoring the harsh realities of life in the region.
