History
Nordic jazz grew up in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland by folding local folk traditions into jazz, and its particular sound took shape in the 1960s. A key figure was the American composer George Russell, who lived in Scandinavia from 1964 to 1969, taught his Lydian Chromatic Concept at Lund University and worked with young players including Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen. The next push came from ECM, founded in 1969 by the German producer Manfred Eicher: Garbarek's Afric Pepperbird of 1971 was the first Norwegian jazz album on the label, and Keith Jarrett's Belonging of 1974, with Nordic players on board, helped set what became known as the ECM sound. The music leans on modal harmony and minor keys, long sustained lines, flexible time instead of strict swing, heavy reverb and natural acoustics, with space and silence treated as material. Russell called Garbarek just about the most uniquely talented jazz musician Europe had produced since Django Reinhardt. In Sweden, Jan Johansson's Jazz på svenska became the best-selling Swedish jazz record. The line runs on through Nils Petter Molvær, Arve Henriksen, Bobo Stenson and the Esbjörn Svensson Trio.
