Nintendocore

Nintendocore from the 2000s: chiptune leads, breakdown chugs, chip arpeggios, playful and aggressive in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Nintendocore puts a hardcore or metal band next to the sound chip of an old game console: guitars and drums run alongside 8-bit synth lines and game sound effects, and Loudwire compared the result to scene kids lost inside a Mario game. The name began as a joke by Nathan Winneke of Horse the Band, whose roars, metalcore hysterics and crusty 8-bit synths became the template; “The Black Hole” from their third album, The Mechanical Hand, piles on effects from numerous games. The Advantage took another route. Formed by students at Nevada Union High School, the instrumental band plays nothing but music from original Nintendo games, and The New York Times counted it among the groups that brought game music into the modern spotlight. Minibosses from Phoenix cover Contra, Double Dragon and Excitebike with Kyuss-inspired riffs, and the Harvard Crimson called them sworn rivals of the NESkimos. The Depreciation Guild pulled the style toward shoegaze on its 2007 debut In Her Gentle Jaws, whose title track Pitchfork said could pass for music from an NES cartridge. In 2016 artists under the Nintendocore Lives label released Smash 64, a compilation themed on the original Super Smash Bros., to revive the genre.
